Morelia

About 200 miles northwest of Mexico City is one of the country's most significant colonial cities, Morelia. The city is also the capital of the State of Michoacan. Mexico's first Viceroy, Antonio de Mendoza, gave Morelia its original name (Valladolid) in 1541 after the city in Spain in which he was born. However, following Mexico's War of Independence, the city was renamed to honor one of its greatest heroes born here: Jose Maria Morelos.

Morelia, a colonial city with an aristocratic feel, is filled with elegant Spanish Colonial architecture; pink stone and baroque styles dominate throughout. The city has been extremely well preserved, and like many colonial cities in Mexico, planning regulations are strict and ensure that the original colonial look and feel is kept authentic and true to its heritage.

Morelia has a cathedral with twin towers reaching a height of over 200 feet. With its pink stone, it is said to be one of Mexico's finest. Its also a university city where history and culture are very much apparent and there are a number of good language schools which many people come to study at for extended periods of time.
